Gum disease damages your oral health. In its early stages it causes bad breath and bleeding gums. Advanced cases can lead to tooth loss. As bad as all that is, it can also hurt your overall health.
Medical research has linked infected gums to diabetes, stroke, and even Alzheimer’s disease. The bacteria that causes the disease can get into your bloodstream. If it travels to your heart, the resulting inflammation can cause or worsen coronary disease. This short video from the British Heart Foundation does a good job of explaining this.
The good news is, avoiding gum disease isn’t hard. It starts with good oral hygiene at home. Brush twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. Floss every day too. See us every six months for an exam and cleaning. We’ll get rid of disease-causing bacteria you’ve missed at home. We’ll also look for early signs of trouble, so we can treat the disease before it can cause serious damage. At our Gilbert, AZ office, we use several methods of treating infected gums: deep cleaning treatment, laser therapy, and topical antibiotic.
